La Roja Attends Exclusive Rehearsal of Juanes Unplugged with MTV3!

A couple months ago, I was actually brainstorming a “Where is Juanes? blog post as he had all but disappeared from the music scene. So, you can imagine my surprise, when he appeared in my inbox along with an invitation to attend the rehearsal of his Unplugged session with MTV Tr3s!

I have to admit, for the first couple songs, I was disappointed. But, let me explain: The first and only time I saw Juanes live was in 2006 (I should probably share how I met him in another post) and the show was incredible, he totally rocked it…but, last night…the man standing on stage, 2012 Juanes, was quite different. I realized that this wasn’t the same long-haired, tattooed rockero, but a calmer, more mature Juanes. However, in this intimate setting, it didn’t take long for him to pull me in, and I was able to sit back and enjoy his beautiful musica which remains as amazing as ever.

Fans of Juan Luis Guerra will be happy to hear that he worked very closely with Juanes and serves as the musical director for the event as well as producer on the Unplugged album. It was quite the experience to be able to watch these two maestros interact, as they were pretty much in constant contact during the rehearsal. However, the most amazing display of Guerra’s genius came during the recording of Odio Por Amor when he pulled up a chair on the stage and proceeded to conduct the high school choir, small string orchestra, brass section, AND the handful of other musicians scattered around the stage. We were also treated to guest appearances by Brazilian singer Paula Fernandes and Spanish music legend, Joaquin Sabina.

Another interesting aspect of the Unplugged session was that Juanes invited his “Most Talented Fans” to perform a duet with him via an online contest hosted earlier this year. The winners were…get ready for this…Emmanuela and Juan Manuel (don’t think they could have planned that) who sang “Fotografia” and “A Dios Le Pido” respectively….and I must say, they both did a great job! I can only imagine what this opportunity meant to these aspiring artistas. Props to Juanes for sharing the spotlight and making dreams come true!
