Mexican Star Confirmed To Be Next Zorro!
When taking a scriptwriting class as a film student, my professor told me that there wasn’t really such a thing as an original story, you just had to find a more interesting way to tell the same story everyone else was telling. This is kind of hard to dispute when we see Hollywood literally remaking classic (and not-so classic…) films over and over again. This time around movie-goers are getting ready to experience 20th Century Fox‘s remake of Zorro, and we’ve got one hot, talented actor to fill the lead role of our masked avenger, Gael García Bernal.
The story of Zorro has been told…and retold…numerous times on the big screen since the early years of Hollywood, but I think its probably a safe bet, that the rendition you’re most familiar with is the franchise helmed by Antonio Banderas in the 90’s and early 2000’s. Banderas has left an iconic image in our brains of who this swashbuckingly, charming, smoldering character really is, but if they want to jumpstart this narrative, I really think Bernal is a great choice. He is a beyond talented actor with credits under his belt ranging from the indie Y Tu Mamá También to the more box office oriented rom-com, Letters to Juliet, and I have faith that he’ll be able to bring more depth to the character.
This updated version of the Zorro story is currently titled, Zorro Reborn, but with a fuzzy 2014 slated release year, that could easily change. All we really know so far is that it will be set in a futuristic scenario, and considering it is traditionally set pre-1900’s, its relatively unclear what “futuristic” means exactly.
Still, I’m really not one to turn down a good pop-corn movie, even if it is a remake, and I will definitely never turn down the chance to check out Bernal showcasing his acting chops. So, consider me on board for the rebirth of Zorro.
