Jennifer Lopez Teams Up With Independent Cable Network NuvoTV.
Jennifer Lopez officially announced last week that she is partnering with independent cable network, NuvoTV. Through her production company, Nuyorican Productions, the Latina superstar will develop creative programming and marketing with the overall goal of increasing viewership for the network which is currently available in about thirty million homes. It’s not just about the viewers though. Lopez is also excited about the opportunities this could bring for Latino entertainers/creatives.
“We want to create a place for people to go. Sort of a BET and HBO mixed together — but Latino.”-Jennifer Lopez
Its definitely exciting that Lopez and NUVO are pairing up to provide a platform and outlet for Latinos that are seeking entertainment and those that seek to entertain. However, they aren’t exactly alone in this endeavor. Major corporations and industry heavyweights have been scrambling to corner the Latino market with both Spanish dominant and English dominant networks and channels being announced and unveiled left and right. From MGM’s Canal Ella to Robert Rodriguez’s deal with Comcast and his El Rey channel for Latino males to HBO’s HBO Latino (just to name a few), it would be inaccurate to suggest at this point that there isn’t a platform or content out there for the Latino audience.
So what makes NuvoTV different? Well, this is an independent network, and these are not words you hear very often. Originally launched in 2004 as SiTV, Nuvo is not affiliated with any of the major networks, and while this might make it difficult for them to grab the attention of advertisers, audiences and cable TV operaters, I think it also gives them a fresh edge, especially now that Lopez is on board. I’m hopeful that they will come up with original and engaging content that might be different that the usual fair. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see though.
Slated for the fall, NuvoTV has a show with Mario Lopez interviewing A-list celebs titled, Mario Lopez: One-On-One, and JLo and her production team are already cooking up a music special that covers her Dance Again World Tour. Find out more on their official page.
