Julio Cesar Castillo Performs El Rey on The Voice

Ooorale!! Tonight, during my weekly ritual of watching “The Voice” on NBC, I was transported into my Mexican happy place when I heard that Team Blake’s Julio Cesar Castillo was going to be performing José Alfredo Jiménez’s classic mariachi tune “El Rey.” He did an absolutely fantastic job and the crowd (as well as the judges) really seemed to like it!

This is was a huge performance…as part of the live play off rounds which is the first round where America decides who will stay and who will go home. Pretty risky move to sing a song in Spanish…knowing that the majority of the people watching and potentially voting for you- didn’t understand the lyrics and most likely never heard of this classic cancion.

The house- Latina, Christina Aguilera said that she was so glad that he stayed true to his roots and complimented the “richness” of his vibrato. Blake was pretty adorable as he admitted not knowing what Julio was saying, but shared that he connected with the song emotionally (daleee Blake!). Now, I just can’t wait to see Diego Val performing next week!

Enough talking…now time for some action! With the new setup on “The Voice” fans can vote for their favorite contestants via phone, Facebook, or NBC.com!

What did you think of this live performance? Are you voting for Julio?

Way to go Julio Cesar Castillo, staying true to who you are… I too was shocked to hear you were singing "El Rey" [it gave me goose bumps 🙂 ] but loved every minute of it! I was very sad to see you go home!
