La Roja’s Special Edition Gringa Guide: How To Be A Fresa!

During my time in Mexico, I learned all about the word fresa. Obviously, the original meaning of this word is strawberry, those sweet red frutas we all love. However, while in school in Puebla MX, I was identified as…well…a fresa! You are probably asking…what does that even mean? Am I a strawberry? Give you one guess…

While they might be one of my favorite foods, no…I’m not actually a strawberry (haha). Being fresa refers to chicas who are rather girly, usually from a more affluent family, and speak with a very distinctive nasal tone and tend to overuse Mexican slang. The video below gives you an idea of the fresa accent…

Since moving to Miami, I’m sad to say I’ve lost my fresa accent, but I’ve been thinking about all the fun times I had in Mexico as the Gringa Fresa and it sometimes makes me wish I could get my fresa-ness back! After meeting recently with nutritionist Sylvia Melendez Klinger and the California Strawberry Commission, it occurred to me: you are what you eat! I can re-connect with my fresa side by adding more strawberries to my diet…ok, maybe that’s a stretch, but I had no idea just how good fresas are for you! Each strawberry is packed full of nutrients and antioxidants and has more more vitamin c then an orange! Even though they are super dulce (like me…), fresas are low in sugar and a cup has only 50 calories.

So for all those aspiring fresas out there or if you just really love strawberries like me, here are some yummy recipes!
