Gringa Guide: Cinco De Mayo Edition
Cinco De Mayo is this Saturday and you know what that means for gringas….Fiesta Time! I learned the hard way that in Mexico, CDM is not the holiday we portray it to be in the US. As most of you know, CDM has its roots in the unlikely victory of the Mexican army over the French back on May 5, 1862 in Puebla, Mexico (where I was living!). Although outnumbered and poorly equipped, the Mexican army managed to win the battle- leaving Cinco De Mayo as a symbol of unity and pride.
To me, CDM is similar to Tex-Mex food, it is NOT authentic Mexican, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy it for what it has to offer. Tex-Mex gives us nacho cheese, and Cinco De Mayo gives us a great excuse to drink tequila and celebrate with friends.
So, with the knowledge of the real historia behind the holiday now in your celebro, get out there and enjoy the party in Tres easy steps:
La Gringa “Uno, Dos, Tres” Gringa Guide to CDM:
- Dress Up: This is a great opportunity to break out your bright colors, celebrate Spring and the vibrant Mexican culture! Our amigas at Amway even did a how-to make-up video featuring Miss America 2012 as she prepares for a night out on CDM (her Spanish is adorable…)
- Drink Tequila:I mean…do you need a reason? Tequila usually makes everything better…including your night out on CDM!
- Hang with your amigos: Colorful make-up and booze aside, this is what your Cinco De Mayo holiday should be all about. Getting together with your friends and enjoying each others company. And maybe…if you have the opportunity, you can share with your gringo friends the REAL reason May 5th is celebrated in Mexico!
So, take it from me, the combo of these 3 steps will make for a fun Cinco De Mayo! Do you already have a game plan in mind? How are you spending your CDM?
