Filmmakers Plan To Bring Latino Superhero, Paleta Man To The Big Screen!

With Hollywood remaking the same four or so superhero movies over and over again (A whole new version of Spiderman was just released, really?), you can imagine my happy surprise upon discovering two author/filmmakers, Paul Ramirez and Matthew Ramirez are making efforts to bring a new superhero to the silver screen, and the best part…he’s a Latino!

The project is being spearheaded by the Los Angeles based Lobo Video Productions, which is headed by Paul and Matthew, and it is based on a series of children’s books…written by Paul and Matthew! The story chronicles the adventures of Esteban Ruiz, an ice cream vendor who finds powers in a magic gold medallion and uses his new powers to fight the bad guys!

There are a lot of reasons to be excited about this project. You’ve got a Latino character who is the lead hero (not the villian!), its a new and creative story, and it is intended to be a bilingual feature film. There is potential here to provide Latino audiences, especially the younger crowd, with a positive Latino pop culture figure. There is also the potential to simply have a pop culture image in the general mainstream of a Latino individual in an active role that isn’t sinister or stereotypical. I have to say a big “daaaaale” to that (“Dale” being my version of the Southern colloqiual “Amen“…in case you were wondering.)

Paul and Matthew are still in the process of securing funding for the project, and here’s hoping they get it!

Side Note:

Check out this kick-ass T-shirt! (Not sure if it’s directly related, but I love it.)
