Selena Gomez Grows Up For New Film, Spring Breakers.
Selena Gomez attended the 69th Venice Film Festival last week to promote the world premiere of her new film Spring Breakers. While the title might have that teen-pop vibe you’d expect from the Disney raised starlet, I can assure you that this film is not Selena’s usual fair. She shared the following message on her Facebook page (which has over 33 million “Likes”) after the premiere:
Tonight was one of the most amazing nights I’ve ever had. Our film got a standing ovation at the Venice film festival! I couldn’t stop crying. Being apart of such an amazing project was such a blessing. From Wizards to tonight.. I’m truly so blessed. Im still in shock! I hope you guys enjoy Harmony’s film making. He truly is amazing. Note: this movie is not for my littles 😉 it’s rated R! I just wanted to share this night with y’all! Love you!
The film chronicles the antics of four friends, Gomez’s character Faith, Candy (Vanessa Hudgens), Cotty (Rachel Korine), and Brit (Ashley Benson) who lead very average college-aged lives and are looking to add a little excitement into their usual daily grind. The film also features out-of-the box actor James Franco as a drug and arms dealer named Alien who crosses paths with the girls when they attempt to rob their way into funding their Spring Break vacation. Hijinks insue and the decidedly un-Disney story unfolds.
Four bored girls getting into trouble doesn’t exactly sound like the most appealing story ever, but director Harmony Korine, who does not tell average stories, is sure to make the film going experience worth the trek.
What I’m really interested in though, is seeing what Selena has to offer. Between her music and her acting, the young star already has an impressive career under her belt. Yet, that career has been relatively pre-packaged and sterile up till this point. It’s exciting to see that Gomez is branching out and using her talents to engage in more relevant/interesting subject matter.
Spring Breakers made its North American debut at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 7th, but no wide release date has been set yet. Stay tuned though, I’ll be sure to get a complete review up once I get my eyes on this film!
