If there’s one thing I could say to explain the essence of me, it would be: I love food. I mean, I really, really love to eat. I love cooking for familia and friends. I love experimenting and trying out new comida and recipes. When I wake up in the morning, there is a very good chance the first thing I think about is what I’m going to get eat that day.

Growing up in Dallas, Texas, tex-mex was a big staple in my diet from a pretty young age. As I grew up and got more curious about different foods, I branched out and tried Venezuelan food (arepas! tostones!), authentic Mexican food (tortas! mole! horchata!), Cuban food (croquettes! ropa vieja!) and on and on. Needless to say, the delicious and comforting cuisines of Latin America and the Caribbean are fully integrated into my regular meal rotation at this point.

So, you can imagine, that when I decided to try out being a vegan this past fall, I was a little preocupada about some of my favorite foods. Luckily though, I’ve discovered, through some research and culinary trial and error, that most of the foods/dishes I just can’t live without fit pretty well into the vegan lifestyle, and the ones that don’t quite mesh, can be fairly simply adapted.

Entonces, I’m kicking off a post series for 2014 that will cover my personal adventures in “Going Vegan with Latino Recipes.” I’ll be blogging about recipes I find, ones I have to adapt, foods that are naturally already vegan, tips & tricks I learn along the way, and I might even throw in a few creations of my own!


Why Vegan?

Okay, so you might be wondering, pero que? What’s up with going vegan anyway? Honestly, over the past few years, I’ve experimented with vegetarianism, eating local and organic and striving overall to live more sustainably. Vegan wasn’t really on my radar though, until I visited my sister-in-law in California, and sampled my first ever Vegan dishes. It was love at first bite, seriously.

Removing meat and dairy from your diet is pretty dramatic, but it only took me about a month to adapt. At the end of the day, being vegan has benefits for individual’s health, as well as for the environment, ecosystems and animals. For more info on this, see the links below!

What is a vegan?

“A vegan is someone who tries to live without exploiting animals, for the benefit of animals, people and the planet. Vegans eat a plant-based diet, with nothing coming from animals – no meat, milk, eggs or honey, for example..” [Vegan Society]
