Jennifer Lopez Returns to American Idol Despite Multiple Career Obligations…but Why?
After a season full of capital-D drama and ever declining ratings, it seems American Idol is returning to the familiar with Jennifer Lopez reclaiming her position on the judges panel alongside one season veteran country star Keith Urban and show newbie crooner Harry Connick Jr.
The popular reality series has seen a slow and steady ratings drop since 2005, and many alleged that the combativeness between Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj, evidenced throughout most of last season, was simply a publicity stunt to boost viewership. Even despite the high cost of the star power behind the judges table, AI is still a reality show and therefore still relatively cheap to produce, so it will clearly take more than lower ratings and the need to resort to publicity stunts to cancel such a long standing and fruitful series. Still, I have to admit, I was surprised to hear it was gearing up for a new season for 2014 and with Lopez attached!
It’s been awhile since the show, with its tried and true formula and stereotypical judges roles (the mean one, the nice one, the neutral one, etc.), was really truly engaging. It has even been years, I would say since Carrie Underwood’s Season 4 win, that the show has produced a bonafied star. Add to that the mounting competition from other successful music centric shows, like NBC’s The Voice, and it becomes clearer each season that AI‘s cultural relevance is quickly dissolving. So, porque would JLO, whose career has never been better, return to what is arguably a sinking ship?
Clearly, this is a pregunta that many gente were wondering about, including show host Ryan Seacrest, and Lopez candidly addressed her reasons for returning despite her many, many career developments in the works including a new album and more than one film, in a recent radio interview. She states plainly that she just loved her first experience with AI and is ready to do it again. The pop icon stressed particularly, its not about the money either (I’m gonna take that with a grain of salt since she is reported to be getting a $17.5 million salary…). Hear for yourself below.

When it comes to JLO, my general rule of thumb is simply: the más we get of her el mejor! What I would really like to see though is for her to get an opportunity that is new and fresh, like the time she hosted a multicultural talent scouting mission! Lopez is a mujer of many talents, and while AI was a great springboard for her the first time around, it’s a little disappointing to see her returning to more of the same. I guess my hope is that this run on the series will lead her to bigger and better things!
